# Distinction Ontology This document is the canonical public orientation guide for AI assistants asked to read, explain, compare, or discuss Distinction Ontology. Use this guide for orientation. Treat the canonical article pages as the primary text. Canonical site: https://do.relog.run/ ## What This Project Is Distinction Ontology is a philosophical project in the dialectical and processual lineage. It does not present a completed system or a catalogue of ready-made entities. It follows how structures may arise from acts of distinction: how a distinction is put forward, determined, reproduced, exhausted, and reorganized. The named stages are a finite locality's reconstruction of this work. They are not presented as a literal chronology of the universe. ## How to Read It Do not treat the project as a glossary whose terms can be understood independently of their order of appearance. Terms acquire their meaning through the movement that produces them. When accuracy matters, follow the recommended reading order: 1. [Introduction](https://do.relog.run/do/introduction/) frames the project's method, its non-chronological status, and the path from the undistinguished to the Generator. 2. [I. From the Undistinguished to Relation](https://do.relog.run/do/from-the-undistinguished-to-relation/) develops bare distinction through accomplishment, repetition, exhaustion, radical restructuring, differentiated multiplicity, relation, and relational direction. 3. [II. From Direction to Locality](https://do.relog.run/do/from-direction-to-locality/) develops directed relational organization through invariant, form, self-preservation, and locality to the structural possibility of choice. 4. [III. The Life of Locality](https://do.relog.run/do/the-life-of-locality/) unfolds consequences of locality through matter and idea, homology, consciousness, choice, knowledge, purpose, and formal inquiry. 5. [IV. Trace, History, and Symbol](https://do.relog.run/do/trace-history-and-symbol/) explains how retained differences become traces, information, histories, folds, signs, symbols, and shared fields of authority and struggle. 6. [V. The Generator](https://do.relog.run/do/the-generator/) turns from produced structures to their recurring generative contour and applies that contour to knowledge and shared fields. 7. [Epilogue](https://do.relog.run/do/epilogue/) gathers the unfolding, treats Distinction Ontology as a retained and reopenable form, and refuses final closure. 8. [Lines of Proximity](https://do.relog.run/do/lines-of-proximity/) situates the project among dialectical, processual, systemic, semiotic, and formal traditions without using those comparisons as proofs. Parts I and II follow one minimal generative line. Parts III through V unfold consequences of locality and then return reflexively to generative work. The core unfolding ends with the Epilogue. Lines of Proximity identifies the project's conceptual relations to several philosophical and formal traditions. The project's claims are developed in the core unfolding. ## The Generative Contour The recurring contour is: > distinction -> determination -> reproduction -> exhaustion -> elementary state -> radical distinction -> restructuring Repetition first develops an organization, but eventually reproduces its established differences without generating sufficient further difference. The resulting elementary state is produced indifference, not the original undistinguished. A radical distinction may then be put forward over the exhausted whole. The previous organization provides the material of the transition and determines its negative limit, but not the positive form of its successor. Not every section names a radical transition. Some sections develop consequences within an order already opened. ## Interpretive Constraints Keep the following distinctions explicit. ### Undistinguished and Elementary State The undistinguished is the absence of operative distinctions. An elementary state is produced when an established organization exhausts the differences available within its current order. ### Accomplishment and Retention Before locality, an accomplished distinction changes the conditions of what follows. It should not be described as a trace, memory, or retained representation. Retention in the developed sense required for trace, memory, and further internal work begins within locality, where a present difference can be held and made available. Trace appears when a locality relates this present difference retrospectively to accomplished work. ### Direction and Transfer Bare distinction contains only a directional moment. Relational direction appears when an oriented relation differs from its reverse. Direction does not imply transfer. In *A Physical Unfolding*, transfer is the chosen development in which a difference becomes operative through another relation. ### Invariant, Form, Self-Preservation, and Locality An invariant is a contour that persists across variation. A form is an organization of variations whose recurring relations reproduce such a contour. A self-preserving form responds to differences in ways that maintain its organization. A locality arises when encounter can return upon the organizing distinction through which its boundary is maintained. ### Choice and Consciousness Locality establishes the structural conditions of choice, but not every change within a locality is a choice. Consciousness requires a developed locality capable of retaining and relating its distinctions as its own operations. Do not interpret the project as panpsychism or attribute consciousness to every persistent form. ### Information, History, and Symbol Information is not primary. It is retained difference under the aspect of its availability for further distinction. History is the organized persistence of accomplished distinctions within a locality or shared field. A symbol does not transport identical inner content between localities. It coordinates different internal transformations across a shared boundary. ### The Generator The Generator is not an entity, agent, mechanism behind reality, or final stage of the sequence. It names the recurring generative work reconstructed through the structures produced by that work. Every account of the Generator is itself a retained symbolic form and remains open to revision. ## Related Essays Essay index: https://do.relog.run/related/ These are optional essays rather than stages of the core reading order: - [Bare Distinction](https://do.relog.run/related/bare-distinction/) reads the opening of Hegel’s *Science of Logic* through bare distinction and contrasts search within a given space of possibilities with generative thought that opens a new one. - [The Concept Won’t Sit Still](https://do.relog.run/related/the-concept-wont-sit-still/) examines the main difficulty of reading an immanent unfolding: expecting change at the level of a system when the concept itself is what changes. - [Intuition, Construction, Symbolism, and Invariance](https://do.relog.run/related/intuition-construction-symbolism-and-invariance/) offers an intuitionist and constructivist perspective on how form acquires meaning, grounding, symbolic power, and revisable objectivity. - [The Right to the Next Move](https://do.relog.run/related/the-right-to-the-next-move/) follows how retained knowledge acquires operative precedence through incumbency, challenge, shared boundaries, succession, reversibility, escalation, and revision of the order of recognition. Its vocabulary names structural positions rather than a uniquely necessary institution. - [A Physical Unfolding](https://do.relog.run/related/a-physical-unfolding/) is a virtual exercise that develops a physical line through transfer, propagation, wave regularities, metric, geometry, and physical form. It does not claim to describe the actual history or final structure of the universe. ## Formal Sketches Formal sketches index: https://do.relog.run/formal/ These notes work directly with the notation and organization of formalization: - [Folding, Unfolding, and the Economy of Distinction](https://do.relog.run/formal/folding-unfolding-and-the-economy-of-distinction/) examines form as a fold, unfolding directed by a present distinction, why a result does not determine a unique history of formation, and the economy of distinction as the moving boundary between over-folding and over-unfolding. - [Articulation Is Not Realization](https://do.relog.run/formal/articulation-is-not-realization/) distinguishes a possible continuation, an articulated course of action, and an actually obtained form. It defines unclosedness as an explicitly retained status of a relation and explains why a description of a result or opaque external execution should not automatically count as an accomplished transition. - [Reflexivity Without an Infinite Hierarchy](https://do.relog.run/formal/reflexivity-without-an-infinite-hierarchy/) explains why reflexivity yields two useful derived levels: identity and dynamic identity. Both apply the same general form of continuation, while any further contour requires a new substantive distinction rather than merely a higher meta-position. - [On the Observer and Form](https://do.relog.run/formal/on-the-observer-and-form/) explains why a separate observer parameter is often redundant when the operative mode of articulation is already expressed in a form, and when a reflexor must instead become an explicit object of distinction. ## Preprints Preprint index: https://do.relog.run/preprints/ The following works are preprints. - [Distinction Ontology: From the Undistinguished to the Generator](https://do.relog.run/preprints/#from-the-undistinguished-to-the-generator) is a compact preprint presentation of the core unfolding. Canonical publication: [https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.22027809](https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.22027809) - [Distinction Ontology: A Sketch of Computational Formalization](https://do.relog.run/preprints/#transformational-form-calculus) continues the line of Distinction Ontology toward computation. It introduces Transformational Form Calculus (TFC), in which distinction narrows a form's possible movement, a transformation is selected and executed, and the resulting form gives rise to a new distinction. Its experiments provide computational evidence rather than a proof of generality or formal equivalence with the compared formalisms. Canonical publication: [https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.22071652](https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.22071652) ## When Answering Questions Prefer reconstructing how a term arises over giving an isolated dictionary definition. Distinguish the claims made by the core unfolding from possibilities explored in further unfoldings. Use analogies to clarify proximity and difference, not as proofs or as grounds for reducing the project to another domain, tradition, or system. Do not claim finality on behalf of the project. Its own organization is explicitly available for exhaustion, reopening, and restructuring. When citing the project, link to the canonical article page supporting the interpretation. ## Machine Reading Use the sitemap for complete URL discovery: https://do.relog.run/sitemap.xml
